I've updated a new version that should complete all tests for everyone, provides an 'observations log' that attempts to point out the important features of the diagnostic, and also includes the default email client in the output.

Given that the last version didn't destroy anyone's computer, I'm calling this version an 'alpha'--it may not always do the right thing and is not feature-complete, but it should at least run on any modern version of Windows.

Once again, please paste the results when run on your PC in a reply, and let me know of anything interesting about your setup that could affect the results.

As before, you can download FastTest from: http://jhoward.fastmail.fm/fasttest/fasttest.zip

Ok, mine took a good hour to run, and eventually finished by a timeout. Once again, I am behind a super-firewall Wink

Here's the output anyway (I think it's the 'FastMail.FM SMTP proxy test' that took an hour and eventually timed out):

Flinchlock--can you use the 'Copy' button in FastTest, which automatically copies both logs, not just the observation log?

Eric--is that the whole log? No "FastMail.FM HTTP test"?

Also, can you send me some info on how to work out what proxy is set up and use it?

Yes, this is the whole lot of it... It timed out after a long time and finished at this point... Confused
IE proxy configuration is in
Code:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings

The pac-file URL is in the value 'AutoConfigURL'.
You can play around to check what values are created for manual proxies.
I can't here at work: even though I am administrator on my machine, they have locked the Internet configuration settings and I can't change them...
Anybody knows what registry key to change?

Eric

As you prob already know, MSIE has more or less 3 options for specifying proxy settings. All settings are under:
Quote:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings]

and they take precedence in the order listed. In other words, if #1 is enabled and found, #2 and 3 are ignored; same with #2...

    One is "Automatically Detect Settings". It simply looks for a host named WPAD (in your domain, then in parent domains up to a "safe" level) and asks for a wpad.dat file (?) which is expected to contain auto config settings. I'd put the reg setting here, but I'm having a tough time finding it. Anyone else have it?

    Second is "Use automatic configuration script", in which you specify a location for the autoconfig file.
    Quote:
    "AutoConfigURL"="http://autoconfig.host/autoproxy.pac"

    Last is manual settings (aka "Use a proxy server"). First you have to "enable" this (and disable the others), then you specify a proxy server and a port number. The setting I list here would apply to all methods (HTTP, HTTPS, GOPHER, etc), but it's also possible to configure them separately.
    Quote:
    "ProxyEnable"=dword:00000001
    "ProxyServer"="proxy.server.host:port"

a suggestion: making the application multi-thread would be nice, because it takes a while to finish
