I've posted the source and a compiled binary of my first bits of code to http://jhoward.fastmail.fm/fasttest . To compile, you need Delphi 6.0 Personal (free from www.borland.com ) and Indy v8 (free from http://www.nevrona.com/indy/ ).

Basically this is just me trying to remember how Delphi works and see how to use Indy and get Windows network information. I whipped up a little code in the last couple of hours and it seems to work OK. Please try it and let me know how you go. At this stage the UI is simply two buttons: 'Go' runs a few basic tests, and 'Copy' puts the results of those tests on the clipboard.

If you could paste your results into a reply here I'd appreciate it, along with comments about your OS and version etc (hmmm... I'll add some code after lunch to do a quick system summary, I think).

This may or may not be entirely useful, as it seems my proxy server at work doesnt resolve DNS properly sometimes, so whilst i can log in and check FastMail fine from the web interface, and also from "IMAP Notify" (small imap checker program) when using the FastMail IP address, FastTest didnt seem to try this...

I also had to kill the program manually to get it to stop in the end...
So maybe a "stop/quit/kill" button would be good.

Here's the stuff anyway...

Matthew, I think the traceroute will stop after 20 hops anyway--can you try letting it go on to see what happens. The checks only include two traceroute tests.

I'm curious why the DNS check didn't work. Can you please paste in the full output of 'ipconfig /all' run in a command prompt on that machine?

The output of ipconfig /all on this machine is also below..

This error is WSAHOST_NOT_FOUND... Looks like your DNS cannot resolve internet names?

Hi,

I just tried it at work behind my firewall and got:
Quote:

Windows version:
Windows NT
Major Version = 5
Minor Version = 0
Build Number = 2195
Platform ID = 2
CSDVersion = Service Pack 2

Web browser:
Browser = iexplore.exe
Version = 6.0.2600
Path = C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer

Current time:

UTC Time:

Your DNS Servers:
166.12.210.74
166.12.208.51
166.12.240.189

Your IP address:
166.12.97.63

Traceroute ZoneEdit:
resolving 207.228.252.101
207.228.252.101 resolved to 207.228.252.101

At this point, it opened a message box showing 'Non-echo type response received' and stopped...
BTW my firewall is a 'proper' firewall, it doesn't resolve addresses, and only lets through HTTP connections. My firewall is configured using a PAC file.

I also had a thought: it is possible that some company with a proper firewall like mine resolves 207.228.252.101 into a local address (why not?), and in this case, trying to connect to FastMail.FM using the IP address would connect to a local machine Evil or Very Mad.

I'm just a home only user (retired) with a couple of PCs (all W2K). I have a dedicated firewall called IPCOP, and its IP is 192.168.1.1. (See http://ipcop.sourceforge.net )

If there is a problem, what/where/when do I do with the output from FastCheck? Post a msg on this Forum? Post a msg on EmailDiscussions.com?

My test is ended up with an error message: Socket Error # 10061 Connection refused.

Tried running it several times but always ended up at the same point. I'm sure FM is not down since I can still access it using webmail / client. Using 56k connection.

The error code is WSAECONNREFUSED (connection refused). Are you behind a firewall?

No, I'm not. Direct conenction on 56k modem. Perhaps my ISPs block the port? I tried using 2 different ISP. Same error and position.

Thanks for the reports all. I'll explain what these all mean and why sometimes it stops in the middle.

The popup errors are because I haven't yet added error handling. This is why these first result are useful--they tell me where to add error handling and what log result to add in each case.

The DNS issue with Matthewo is because he has no DNS at all configured (see ipconfig shows no DNS servers). That means that when he uses the web, it always goes through a proxy server, and the proxy does the DNS lookups. The socket error simply occurs because the name can't be resolved. The next version will largely use IP addresses once DNS tests are done so this error should go away in this case.

Eric's firewall apparently doesn't let ICMP packets out, so we can't do traceroutes. I'll add a test for ICMP connectivity to the next version and skip the traceroutes if ICMP is not available.

I don't know why Matthewo's trace resolved successfully despite all in-between hops failing. That one is weird.

Flinchlock's output shows a complete run. The tests you see are:
  • IMAP test: get banner from fastmail.fm port 143
  • SMTP test: banner fastmail.fm:25
  • Alternate SMTP: banner fastmail.fm:26
  • SMTP proxy: banner tests for smtp.proxy.fastmail.fm on ports 21, 22, 23, 70, 80, 443
  • HTTP test: Gets a special page from fastmail.fm that displays HTTP headers; allows us to see what proxy is being used if applicable
  • HTTP admin: Just gets the status screen from admin.fastem.com

Ady's test died when the SMTP proxy was attempted on port 80. This will be because his provider transparently proxies port 80.

Nic76's test died on the SMTP test. This means that his provider blocks port 25.

Interesting that no-one who tested had full internet connectivity on all ports provided by their ISP/workplace!

that's correct, my provider doesn't want me to use any other smtp server than their own

Quite impressive investigations, for just a pre-pre-pre-alpha version!
